Features: In 2004, the College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 (CET-4 and CET-6) was officially released with a new syllabus. The new syllabus clearly states that starting from 2005, the new CET-4 and CET-6 exams will place greater emphasis on assessing students' fundamental English skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, as well as their basic knowledge at three levels: vocabulary, syntax, and discourse. The exams will also focus more on reflecting students' comprehensive language application abilities, highlighting the professional and humanistic aspects of the tests, and increasing the assessment of cultural and sociolinguistic knowledge. Newly Compiled English Course (Revised Edition) is a comprehensive reading textbook published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, designed for college English majors. It is a highly popular and widely adopted excellent textbook used by many universities across the country. The textbook is rich in content and covers a broad range of topics, with many passages extracted from authentic English and American texts. While students are exposed to cultural knowledge, they may also encounter varying degrees of difficulty. To help English majors align their regular textbook learning with the new teaching objectives and exam requirements, improve their comprehensive language skills systematically, and enhance their test-taking abilities in sync with future assessments, we have invited a team of frontline teachers with a deep understanding of English major teaching reform and exam reform, as well as extensive teaching experience, to meticulously research and design this series of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Course texts. This series of study guides features four interactive characteristics in its writing and design:
1. Integrating Textbook Learning with Cultural Knowledge
Each unit provides multiple cultural background materials related to the text, allowing students to broaden their horizons, enrich their knowledge, and enhance their cultural literacy while learning the text, thereby expanding textbook learning into a comprehensive cultural knowledge study.
2. Dual Improvement in Reading Comprehension and Writing Appreciation
While explaining the text and improving reading skills, this guide analyzes and evaluates the writing style and techniques of the text, synchronously enhancing students' ability to appreciate and critique writing.
3. Synchronized Enhancement of Language Application and Test-Taking Skills
The guide comprehensively improves students' comprehensive language application abilities through text learning and explanation, while also aligning with the CET-4 and CET-6 exams to ensure that students' practical and test-taking skills are equally enhanced.
4. Organic Combination of Answer Explanations and Systematic Knowledge Organization
The guide provides authoritative and detailed answers to post-text exercises and workbook problems, while also systematically organizing related linguistic points and knowledge, promoting interactive improvement.
This book is the third volume of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Course. The structure and features of each unit are as follows:
- Bilingual Cultural Background Reading
This section offers bilingual cultural background extensions, introducing relevant cultural knowledge (including customs, festivals, related figures, and literary works) mentioned in the text to help students better understand the text while broadening their knowledge and accumulating information, thereby enhancing their cultural literacy in English and American studies.
- Analysis and Appreciation of Text Style
This section evaluates the writing style of the text and analyzes its discourse structure, extracting key content to help students improve their overall understanding of discourse, writing, and structure, as well as their writing skills.
- Framework Analysis of Complex Sentences
This section provides a framework analysis of complex sentences in each text, guiding students on how to break down and understand them, thereby cultivating their ability to perceive and analyze complex sentence structures, enhancing their reading comprehension, and improving their translation skills.
- Core Vocabulary and Phrases Learning
This section fully utilizes the widely popular "Spark-like" memory method to help students memorize and quickly learn core vocabulary and phrases in the text. Unlike traditional textbook guides that, this guide emphasizes the "double combination" teaching philosophy of "memorizing words with images and context," helping students remember frequently tested core vocabulary and phrases through picture-assisted memorization, contextual memorization, and differential explanations.
- Authoritative Explanation of Exercise Answers
This section provides authoritative and detailed answers to post-text exercises in the "Student Book" and all workbook problems. Additionally, the authors of this book—experienced educators working at the forefront of English major teaching—provide explanations for some exercises, pinpointing students' knowledge weaknesses and offering genuine guidance, teaching both the "fish" and the "fishing rod."
Furthermore, this book includes the audio transcripts for the listening sections, assisting students in better completing their listening exercises.
