Features: In 2004, the College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 (CET-4 and CET-6) was officially released with a new syllabus. The new syllabus clearly states that starting from 2005, the new CET-4 and CET-6 exams will place greater emphasis on assessing students' fundamental English skills, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, as well as their basic knowledge at three levels—vocabulary, syntax, and discourse. The exams will also focus more on reflecting students' comprehensive language application abilities, highlighting their professional and humanistic characteristics, and increasing the assessment of cultural and sociolinguistic knowledge.
Newly Compiled English Course (Revised Edition) is a comprehensive reading textbook published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, designed for college English majors. It is a highly popular and widely adopted excellent textbook used by many universities across the country. The textbook is rich in content and covers a broad range of topics, with many passages extracted from authentic English and American texts. While students are exposed to cultural knowledge, they may also encounter varying degrees of difficulty.
To help English majors align their learning with the new teaching objectives and exam requirements, improve their comprehensive language skills systematically, and enhance their test-taking abilities, we have invited a team of frontline teachers with a deep understanding of English major teaching reform and exam reform, as well as extensive teaching experience. Through dedicated research and scientific design, they have innovatively developed this series of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Course Texts.
This series of study guides features four interactive characteristics in its writing and design:
1. Integration of Textbook Learning and Humanistic Knowledge
Each unit provides multiple cultural background readings related to the text, allowing students to broaden their horizons, enrich their knowledge, and enhance their humanistic literacy while studying the text, thereby expanding textbook learning into a comprehensive humanistic knowledge journey.
2. Dual Improvement of Reading Comprehension and Writing Appreciation
While explaining the text and improving reading skills, the guides analyze and evaluate the text's writing style and techniques, synchronously enhancing students' writing appreciation abilities.
3. Synchronized Enhancement of Language Application and Test-Taking Skills
The guides comprehensively improve students' language application skills through text learning and explanation while emphasizing alignment with the CET-4 and CET-6 exams, achieving simultaneous progress in practical and test-taking abilities.
4. Organic Combination of Answer Explanations and Systematic Knowledge Organization
The guides provide authoritative and detailed answers to post-text exercises and workbook problems, while also systematically organizing related linguistic points and knowledge, fostering interactive improvement.
This book is the third volume of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Course Texts. The structure and features of each unit are as follows:
- Bilingual Cultural Background Reading
This section offers bilingual cultural background extensions, introducing relevant cultural knowledge (including customs, festivals, related figures, authors, and works) mentioned in the text to help students better understand the material while broadening their knowledge and accumulating information, thereby enhancing their cultural literacy in English and American studies.
- Analysis and Appreciation of Text Style
This section evaluates the writing style of the text and analyzes its discourse structure, extracting key content to help students improve their overall understanding of text organization, writing, and structure, as well as their writing skills.
- Framework Analysis of Complex Sentences
This section breaks down complex sentences in each text, providing frameworks and methods to solve them, cultivating students' perception and analytical abilities for complex sentence clusters, synchronously enhancing their reading comprehension and translation skills.
- Core Vocabulary and Phrases Learning
This section fully utilizes the popular "Spark-like" memory method to help students memorize core vocabulary and phrases efficiently. Unlike traditional textbook guides that, this guide emphasizes a "dual combination" teaching philosophy—learning words through "image-text integration" and "contextual integration." For frequently tested core vocabulary and phrases, students are assisted in memorization through picture aids, contextual aids, and differential explanations.
- Authoritative Answer Explanations
This section provides authoritative and detailed answers to post-text exercises in the "Student Book" and all workbook problems. Additionally, the authors—seasoned educators with years of frontline teaching experience in English major education—explain some questions, pinpointing students' knowledge weak points and offering true guidance, teaching both the "fish" and the "fishing rod."
Furthermore, this book includes the listening script for the listening section, assisting students in better completing their listening exercises.
