Features: Walden; or, Life in the Woods is a famous collection of essays by American writer Henry David Thoreau. Published in 1854, the book details Thoreau's two-year, two-month life in a regenerating forest by Walden Pond and the many reflections he had during that time. Walden Pond is located in Concord, Massachusetts, in the eastern part of the United States, not far from Thoreau's home. Thoreau referred to this experience as an attempt at simple hermitage. There are multiple Chinese translations of Walden, such as those by Xu Chi, Zhang Zhiyao, and Dai Huan. The 19th century in the United States was a glorious era, and a large number of writers were deeply influenced by Transcendentalism, and Thoreau, who lived during this time, was no exception. As a representative of this era, Thoreau embodied Transcendentalism in his actions, and Walden is a manifestation of this philosophy—it is an essay that contains profound wisdom. Anyone who reads Walden carefully will realize that Thoreau was exploring how to live a practical life, how to experience and live a meaningful life for himself, for his fellow citizens, and for readers both then and later. This book begins with spring, passes through summer, autumn, and winter, and ends with spring, symbolizing the cycle of life where the end is also the beginning, and life begins to rejuvenate.
