Features: From 2000 to 2001, the journal Dialectics of Nature ran a column titled "Discussions on Academic Norms and Academic Ethos Construction," which lasted over a year and published more than 60 articles. Seeing the Big Picture: A Perspective on Academic Ethos in China was compiled based on this column. The book is divided into five parts: "Overview of Misconduct," "Analysis of Causes," "Building Norms," "Moral Rectification," and "Academic Self-Discipline."
The first part is a major exposure of the various ugly "misconduct" phenomena in academia. The second part analyzes the causes of declining academic ethos from different perspectives: external factors lie in the unhealthy elements of the social and cultural environment affecting academia; internal factors include the influence of administrative will in Chinese academia, a lack of necessary independence and autonomy, which has led to the failure to establish academic norms conducive to healthy development. Additionally, a weak sense of self-discipline among academics is also a significant reason.
The third, fourth, and fifth parts propose a series of measures and suggestions to eliminate abuses and rectify academic ethos from different angles, such as addressing both symptoms and root causes, as well as self-discipline versus external regulation. One of the advantages of this book is that it features contributions from multiple authors, each offering perspectives from different angles, making it highly enlightening and valuable for reference.
