Features: In the current modern Chinese textbooks, the Hakka dialect and Gan dialect are listed as two major dialect zones of Chinese. However, since they are not only geographically adjacent but also share intricate connections in history, culture, economy, and folk customs, their linguistic features often overlap. Therefore, how to view the unique linguistic characteristics of these two dialects, whether they should be combined into one major dialect zone or divided into two, has been a long-standing debate in academia, with no definitive conclusion yet. The study of Hakka and Gan dialects is undoubtedly a focal point of current academic research. From 1996 to 2000, the editor undertook and completed the National Social Science Fund "Nineth Five-Year Plan" key project "A Comparative Study of Hakka and Gan Dialects in Jiangxi," which conducted a relatively comprehensive comparative study of the Hakka and Gan dialects in Jiangxi. A Comparative Study of Hakka and Gan Dialects is the culmination of this research. In the study, through extensive field investigations, we provided a wealth of fresh materials, validated previous research findings more comprehensively, and raised some new questions. However, due to limitations in manpower, research time, and the scope of investigation, this study still awaits further in-depth exploration. This series of books conducts relatively thorough research and description on the phonology, vocabulary, and grammar of the respective Hakka and Gan dialect points. The editor believes that they can not only compensate for the shortcomings of A Comparative Study of Hakka and Gan Dialects, but also provide more, more specific, and fresher materials, making new contributions to the in-depth study of Hakka and Gan dialects.
