What causes vulvar tuberculosis?

Patient's question:

I have been feeling uncomfortable with my external genitalia for the past six months. I can feel nodules with my hands, and it's extremely painful. There are also symptoms of ulcers with discharge. I have applied medication myself, but the effect hasn't been very good. When I went to the hospital for examination, it was discovered that I have vulvar tuberculosis.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, vulvar tuberculosis is often caused by internal genital tuberculosis or renal tuberculosis, but it can also be infected through external contact such as sputum or sexual intercourse (primary vulvar tuberculosis). In some cases, vulvar tuberculosis may not have an identifiable primary tuberculous focus. Vulvar tuberculosis in children is usually contracted through exposure to tuberculosis from their parents. Mycobacteria from internal tuberculous lesions can spread to the vulvar skin and mucosa through the bloodstream, lymphatic system, or direct inoculation from adjacent tuberculous lesions. When there is active tuberculosis in internal organs and the patient's resistance to tuberculosis is low, mycobacteria in the body's excreta can infect the orifices through skin or mucosal damage.
