Features: The giant panda is a unique, rare, and endangered wildlife species in China. It is a living fossil that has survived from the animal group of sabertoothed elephants and is regarded as a flagship species for nature conservation. It possesses extremely high ornamental and scientific research value and is deeply loved by people around the world. Due to the destruction of its habitat and its own degeneration, its population has been declining. To ensure the continuation and growth of its lineage, researchers have devoted immense effort and continuously explored solutions. Researchers from the China Giant Panda Conservation Center have, through nearly 20 years of arduous scientific research, finally overcome the three major challenges in giant panda breeding: mating difficulties, fertilization difficulties, and cub survival difficulties. Since 1991, they have successfully bred 36 litters, 56 cubs, and 44 surviving cubs, creating numerous miracles in the history of giant panda breeding and making outstanding contributions to the conservation and research of giant pandas. This book provides systematic and detailed discussions on the history and current status, feeding and management, nutritional supply, estrus and mating, pregnancy and delivery, artificial rearing, disease prevention and treatment, and field release of giant pandas. It will play a positive role in fully utilizing the reproductive potential of captive giant pandas, improving the survival rates of newborn cubs and subadults, and promoting ex-situ conservation of rare and endangered wildlife.
