Features: Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto for Two Violins, Strings, and Continuo was originally composed as a suite for a group of solo instruments. The solo violin version comes from the 1851 edition compiled by S·W·Dehn, but this edition was lost in 1945, and the entry was also removed from the catalog of the Berlin State Library. Our current version is based on Dehn's reliable edition (EP23la). However, there is another source, known as the 1760 "Hering Manuscript" (Hering, manuscript), which is believed to have been drawn by Heinrich, a copyist for Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (the third son of J.S. Bach). Although its authority is not as high as the former, the repeated solo keyboard passages in the slow movements (measures 16, 21, 34, 46) of the manuscript leave a special impression. The Hering manuscript includes fingerings in the basso continuo part, though this is a minor modification made for competitive purposes, it preserves the conventions and ornamentation of the time. The Hering manuscript accepts the interpretation of measure 86 in the basso continuo part (the parallel fifth between the second violin and the viola, which is an unconventional treatment). Both violin melodies are presented above the piano part, completely in accordance with the original version, with no additions. Both solo parts retain the additions by David Oistrakh: to distinguish them from the original bowing, these added bowings are indicated with dotted lines.
