"Look Ahead" is a large-scale, multimedia English teaching series course, developed over several years by four world-renowned English teaching authorities: the BBC English Department, Longman ELT, the British Council, and the Cambridge Assessment English. This course is suitable for students, teenagers, and adults, starting from beginner level and progressing to intermediate level by the end. It is particularly designed to meet the needs of self-learners, offering great convenience and support in its overall design and arrangement.
Through 60 television episodes, accompanied by corresponding textbooks, video tapes, and audio tapes, "Look Ahead" provides learners with abundant audio materials. The topics covered are fresh, diverse, and both informative and engaging, balancing knowledge with fun while emphasizing communicative language skills and providing essential grammar. The 60 high-quality television episodes represent the highest level of foreign language teaching in the international field today. The three British and American hosts, with their clear and natural British and American English, as well as their engaging presentation style, add a unique touch to the program. Scenes, cartoons, illustrations, subtitles, interviews, real-life footage, and serial dramas complement each other, fully leveraging the advantages of television media to demonstrate authentic language use while highlighting key learning points.
The accompanying textbook is divided into two parts: "TV Guide" and "Learning Guide," both meticulously designed, standardized, and illustrated. The "TV Guide" prepares learners to maximize the rich language materials provided by the television program, allowing them to actively participate rather than passively watch other TV-based teaching programs. Each unit in the "TV Guide" spans six pages, focusing on communicative functions, grammar, sentence patterns, and vocabulary featured in the episodes. It includes a variety of exercises designed around the TV content, compares British and American English usage, and provides background knowledge on British and American society and culture. Every five units include a review section, which is attached to the "Mock Tests" at the back of the book for self-assessment. The book also includes a grammar overview, a glossary, and answers to all exercises.
The "Learning Guide" offers great convenience and support for self-learners, helping them review and reinforce what they have learned while guiding them through a structured learning process. It also provides practical learning strategies and tips. Additionally, the "Learning Guide" introduces extensive social and cultural background knowledge of the UK and the US, which in turn enhances language learning. Each unit in the "Learning Guide" spans eight pages: the first page outlines the learning plan, followed by one page each for listening, reading, speaking, and writing exercises, two pages for stories, and one page for review. Learners can flexibly choose any part of the content they need. The book features two ongoing stories: one is a detective story, and the other is a science fiction story. Both stories maintain the engaging plots of excellent literary works while closely aligning with the unit's language learning content. The stories are filled with humor, making reading both a learning experience and a pleasure.
As the official textbook for the KET and PET English proficiency exams, which are internationally recognized and adopted by countries worldwide (China has introduced these exams), "Look Ahead" includes 12 progressively challenging mock tests to help learners prepare. "Look Ahead" equips you with the confidence to take these exams and become a more qualified individual for the 21st century.
The Chinese version of the "Look Ahead" English teaching series course was jointly introduced and adapted by the China Central Radio & Television University and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press.
