Features: Regular script of "The Holy Teaching on the Great Wild Goose Pagoda." Written by Chu Suiliang of the Tang Dynasty. Chu Suiliang (596–658), styled Dengshan, was a native of Qiantang, Zhejiang (now Hangzhou). Among the four great calligraphers of the early Tang Dynasty, Chu Suiliang was considered a later figure. His calligraphy style was influenced by Wang Xizhi, Yu Shinan, and Ouyang Xun, among others, and he achieved mastery, forming his own unique system. His distinctive features include skillfully blending the techniques of Yu and Ouyang, combining square and round forms, and displaying natural wave-like strokes. Compared to his predecessors, his style appears more relaxed and was highly appreciated by Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin. Li Shimin once showed Chu Suiliang Wang Xizhi's ink rubbings from the imperial collection to identify their authenticity, and he made no mistakes, demonstrating his profound understanding of Wang's calligraphy. "The Holy Teaching on the Great Wild Goose Pagoda," also known as "The Holy Teaching at Ci'en Temple," is a full title of "The Holy Teaching of the Three Bibles of the Tang Dynasty." This stele is now preserved at the Great Wild Goose Pagoda in Ci'en Temple, Xi'an. The text was composed by Emperor Taizong and written by Chu Suiliang, erected in the fourth year of the Yonghui era (653). The preface and record are carved on two separate steles, representing Chu Suiliang's masterpiece from his later years. The stele features a slender and strong script, occasionally incorporating cursive and semi-cursive elements, with occasional use of clerical script. It is a typical example of Chu's regular script style. Tang Zhang Huaiquan's "Book Judgment" praises this stele as "like a graceful beauty, seemingly not adorned with silk brocade, with refined elegance and an abundance of charm." Our publishing house has chosen a Ming Dynasty edition for photolithography, ensuring clear character lines and a high-quality rubbing, making it an excellent sixth-grade model for practicing regular script calligraphy.
