Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881) is known as the "cruel genius." Gorky believed that his works embody "the memory of all human suffering," and in terms of talent and artistic expression, he is comparable to artistic masters like Shakespeare. This book introduces his works such as The Story of Marley the Peasant, The 100-Year-Old Woman, The Death of George Sand, A Character Favored by Modern Women, and Land and Children.
The Story of Marley the Peasant is a memoir divided into two layers, essentially a (a memory within a memory): The author recalls life in the Omsk prison, while within this recollection, he adds a memory of a small incident from his childhood. The stark contrast highlights the author's new understanding of the common people.
The 100-Year-Old Woman is a sketch that portrays the daily life and spiritual world of the lower classes in a large city during that time through just two scenes, echoing the common theme of "little people" found in the author's novels.
