What are the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia in men?

Patient's question:

I have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). How does benign prostatic hyperplasia occur.

Doctor's answer:

1. Urination Difficulty
Progressive urination difficulty is a prominent feature of this condition. The symptoms can be categorized into two types: obstruction and irritation. Obstruction symptoms include hesitancy, intermittent flow, terminal dribbling, thin and weak urine stream, and incomplete emptying. Irritation symptoms include frequent urination, nocturia, urinary urgency, and dysuria. Symptoms may worsen due to cold, alcohol consumption, and the use of anticholinergic drugs or psychiatric medications. Long-term obstruction can lead to uremic symptoms such as fatigue, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.
2. Frequent Urination
Frequent urination is the earliest symptom, initially appearing at night and later also during the day. In later stages, when the detrusor muscle of the bladder becomes decompensated, residual urine increases, and the effective bladder capacity decreases, making frequent urination even more severe.
3. Hematuria
Congestion and small vessel dilation occur on the prostatic mucosa, and these vessels may rupture and bleed due to the traction of bladder filling and contraction. Hematuria may also occur if a bladder tumor is present.
