Features: After the Second Gulf War, tens of thousands of American veterans suffered from "Gulf War Syndrome," and some died prematurely. The Korean War, the Vietnam War, and so on, caused how many American veterans to endure psychological torment, ultimately becoming criminals who harmed American society? And the subsequent Iraq War will bring more tragedies. Who should bear the responsibility for all this? War makes some people lose their beautiful homes, but homes can be rebuilt, even made more beautiful and modern. So what about the soul? What about the wounds of the soul? A Chinese-American couple encounters the Iraq War in the United States, telling a moving and tragic love story. The young woman Yi Yi is a lawyer at a law firm, and her beloved Bai Yu enlists in the Iraq War, separating them cruelly. The agonizing longing tortures the couple. The story is set against the backdrop of Yi Yi taking over a case of involuntary manslaughter. Fernando, who had participated in the U.S. war in Vietnam, returned home and became a war, brutally abusing his wife before reluctantly divorcing her and marrying Hu Hanbing, a newly arrived Chinese immigrant. He then persecuted Hu Hanbing and caused his 18-year-old daughter to die tragically. Hu Hanbing, unable to endure any longer, killed Fernando. As Hu Hanbing's defense attorney, Yi Yi deeply feels the inhumanity of war and worries about the safety of her lover, Bai Yu. Ultimately, Yi Yi successfully defends Hu Hanbing, while Bai Yu dies on the battlefield. Yi Yi also dies in a car accident, following her beloved. The story profoundly reveals the trauma war brings to people and expresses modern people's longing for peace and rejection of war.
In 2003, Los Angeles, United States. On the day the U.S.-Iraq War began, it happened to be Yi Yi's birthday. Startled awake by a nightmare, Yi Yi sat bolt upright, panting, beads of sweat trickling down her forehead. In the dimly lit room, only the ticking sound of the alarm clock was audible, which made Yi Yi restless. The nightmare had been terrifying: torrential rain poured down like a flood, crashing onto the ground with the roar of mountains collapsing. Lightning split the murky sky. In the thunderous roar that followed, Bai Yu stood atop a precarious mountain peak, calling for Yi Yi in terror. Amid the storm, Yi Yi ran desperately through the woods, her voice hoarse as she desperately called out for Bai Yu.
