Patient's question:
Listening to a guy on the phone talking to his wife about getting balanitis and that he wasn't cheating. He mentioned that he had also seen some advertisements about this in other magazines, saying that balanitis is different from sexually transmitted diseases, but he had always been unsure about what exactly balanitis was.Doctor's answer:
Symptoms of Balanitis:1. Medication-induced balanitis: Often accompanied by itching, burning sensation, and the affected area is not as large as that of infectious balanitis but presents as a single or small, superficial patch resembling a scrape with clear boundaries. Most importantly, there has been prior use of a certain medication.
2. Infectious balanitis: This is the most common type of balanitis. The causative agents for this infection include bacteria, fungi, or parasites. Among fungi, the most common is Candida albicans. In addition to redness and swelling of the foreskin or glans, small, irregular, erosive white patches may sometimes be observed covering the glans surface. Balanitis caused by vaginal trichomoniasis (a parasite) is typically ulcerative. Another type of erosive balanitis is caused by bacterial infection and is more common in uncircumcised individuals. It usually involves foul-smelling discharge and the glans surface appears covered with numerous small, round, superficial erosions.
