Features: This textbook is designed for civil engineering and hydraulic engineering majors, as well as other related disciplines. It is divided into two parts—Foundations and Special Topics—with a total of 14 chapters. The Foundations section (Chapters 1–10) covers introductory material mechanics, the application of force and deformation analysis and strength calculation for tensile and compressive members, strength calculation based on assumptions for connecting members, strength and stiffness calculation for torsion of circular shafts, displacement and stiffness analysis, bending problems of beams (including: shear force diagrams and bending moment diagrams, geometric properties of sections, stress analysis and strength calculation, displacement and stiffness analysis), stress states and strength theory with engineering applications, and stability problems of columns. The Special Topics section (Chapters 11–14) provides an overview of energy methods in material mechanics, simple statically indeterminate systems, dynamic loads and fatigue strength, and material mechanics of new materials, offering flexibility for different institutions to choose. This book emphasizes fundamental concepts rather than lengthy theoretical derivations or complex numerical calculations. Compared to previous similar textbooks, it has a slightly lower difficulty level, stronger engineering concepts, and introduces numerous engineering examples and problems related to a wide range of fields. Depending on the specific needs of different institutions, the Foundations section requires approximately 48 hours of teaching time (excluding experimental teaching hours), while the Special Topics section requires about 16–24 hours.
