For contemporary Chinese comic creators, apart from Hong Kong, they face a rather challenging creative environment. Since the heyday of comics in Taiwan in the 1980s, local creation has been struggling along a bumpy path. Each comic artist is like a versatile deity, needing to master scriptwriting, storyboarding, character backgrounds, and without formal training. While publishers have strived to learn from Japan's editorial systems, they have often been in a state of constant adaptation. Japan's powerful works surged into the local market in a short time, and local comic artists had to fight back, only to see one after another fall by the wayside, with fewer and fewer comrades left. Meanwhile, the younger generation of comic artists, lacking platforms for publication, has become increasingly marginalized. A few years ago, adventurous comic artists from Taiwan such as You Xiang, Sun Jiayu, and Lin Zhengde traveled to mainland China to publish and develop their work, as ifing all hopes of pushing comics to new heights on the mainland. After exchanging ideas with mainland comic artists, observing the creative and publishing environment firsthand, and gaining practical experience in developing work in mainland China, I realized that in terms of drawing skills and the use of tools, mainland China has indeed reached a certain level, and some comic artists have come to understand the true spirit of creation and are continuously improving. I am deeply moved by these fellow creators who are passionate about comic creation and hope that on the international stage of comics, our local artists can carve out a place for themselves. Here, I share my modest experiences in honing skills through trial and error with fellow creators, hoping to spark further insights and collective creativity to provide comic readers with more and better works, ultimately creating a comics market that is truly independent of foreign influence and belongs to the Chinese people.
