Jin Shengtan's Annotations on the Master's Classical Chinese Writings

Author: Jin Shengtan
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-12-20
Features: With the talent of Jin Shengtan, the book reveals profound wisdom and brilliant writing, like the clarity of a mirror reflecting dust and the touch of a brush painting a dragon, presenting a new perspective on ancient life. Who wouldn’t admire its divine insight and delight in its lofty elegance? It is indeed an unchanging masterpiece that all later scholars must read.
Like the brilliance of Water Margin and Romance of the West Chamber, it is merely a work of playful writing by the author. How could it be as beneficial to moral education as this book? I am particularly sorrowful that readers fail to grasp the essence, losing the author’s intentions, and unknowingly betray the craftsmanship. Therefore, without hesitation, I have undertaken this critique.
As long as the words flow from a sincere heart, they possess countless wonders from any angle—whether viewed directly, sideways, diagonally, or vertically. No matter how talented future readers may be, holding a brush in thought, they cannot truly imitate even a single stroke.
To write tender and moving prose, one must read this text repeatedly. It is not valued for its literary brilliance, but for its pure heart. This text is simply a reflection of a sincere heart.
A piece of marvelous writing conveys a simple truth. Therefore, the wise have always taught that before putting pen to paper, one must thoroughly understand the principles. Principles serve as the standard for writing, while simplicity is the root of brilliance.
Since ancient times, when writing, if it originates from one’s own spiritual essence, it should be allowed to flow freely.
