Features: Public art has been a frequently discussed topic in recent years. It liberates art from indoor spaces, from easel paintings, and from aristocratic tastes. Through genuine communication and feedback with the public and society, art has found its new foothold. This book introduces the status and concepts of public art abroad while also incorporating China's actual conditions. It is evident that currently, Chinese people tend to understand public art in a broader sense, generally using the term "public art" in a wide-ranging way. Naturally, urban sculptures, environmental art, and landscape art are all considered public art without exception. This book employs a narrower definition of public art. In our view, the term "public art" is used not because it sounds appealing or is a fresh and distinctive phrase, nor because it can be universally applied to environmental art, landscape art, and urban sculptures. Rather, it is another way of expressing these concepts: we believe that public art represents a new orientation in the relationship between art and society.
