Rodin on

Author: (Austrian) Rilke, translated by Liang Zongdai, annotated by Liu Zhixia
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-12-01
Features: Liang Zongdai's translations of Rilke's works are not limited to On Rodin. In 1936, Shanghai Times Publishing Company published his translated poetry collection The Pinnacle of Everything, which included two short poems by Rilke: The Serious Moment and In This Village. The following year, Shanghai Commercial Press reprinted the collection, adding another important work by Rilke: The Song of the Standard-Bearer's Love and Death. In 1943, the short story collection Crosscurrents was published in Guilin, Guangxi, featuring four short stories from Rilke's The Stories of the Good God: The Death of Timothy, The Song of Justice, How Deceit Reached Russia, and The Man Who Listens to Stones. The last one is particularly famous, with Michelangelo, the Italian Renaissance sculptor, as the protagonist, written in 1900, just two years after he met Rodin. It has a prophetic quality, and is included in this book for appreciation. After completing the annotations, the editor was still not satisfied and went on to compile a collection of correspondence between Rilke and Rodin, which was published separately. Since the interaction between these two literary and artistic masters spanned over a decade, the written results were far more than just this On Rodin, including a large number of exchanged letters.
