Features: The book unfolds from the late Qing educational reforms to the May Fourth New Culture Movement, advocating the promotion of new knowledge and the organization of national heritage, which ultimately advance in parallel, leading to rapid development in literary history research. During this process, the Peking University classroom has produced many renowned works: Lin Chuanjia's History of Chinese Literature (1904) was merely the first to set a record, followed by even more outstanding works, such as Yao Yongpu's Method of Literary Research, Liu Shipei's History of Medieval Chinese Literature and Studies on the Literary Masters of the Han and Six Dynasties, Huang Kan's Notes on the Dream of the Red Chamber, Wu Mei's Lecture on the Dream of the Red Chamber (later revised to Comprehensive Treatise on the Dream of the Red Chamber), Lu Xun's Sketches of the History of Chinese Fiction, Hu Shi's Fifty Years of Chinese Literature and History of Vernacular Literature, Zhou Zuoren's History of European Literature and Sources of Modern Chinese Literature, as well as Yu Pingbo's Discussions on the Dream of the Red Chamber and You Guoen's Introduction to the Chu Ci. These works, with diverse perspectives and varied styles, collectively supported the construction of the literary history framework in its early stages.
The Ming Dynasty's retrogressive poetic theory emphasized the inheritance of ancient works, with the Tang poetry being the primary object of study and imitation for retrogressive scholars. This book takes the transmission process of Tang poetry in the Ming Dynasty as its research theme, with each chapter exploring this topic from different angles.
