Features: Mr. Yang Zhenzhong is my friend and also my teacher. In the early 1980s, I used the book A Guide to Classical Chinese for Middle School Students that he compiled to teach my students at Fudan High School. It sparked their interest in reading classical Chinese, enriched their cultural knowledge, and laid a solid cultural foundation for them to enter higher education and succeed in society. Many students still remember the scene where I asked them to read and memorize famous passages. In recent years, Mr. Yang has also compiled A New Classical Chinese Reader—Essential Readings for Middle School Students, catering to the current learning situation of middle school students, especially their lack of necessary cultural accumulation. When the book was completed, he asked me to write the preface. As a teacher's request is hard to refuse, I can only share some universally understood insights based on my own experiences in reading and teaching classical Chinese.
