Features: English proficiency is an important measure to assess whether applicants for doctoral programs possess the qualities required for pursuing a Ph.D. degree. To ensure that candidates have a certain level of English ability and can smoothly complete their Ph.D. studies upon admission, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has implemented unified question setting and grading for the English examination for doctoral program admission since 1984. The English examination for doctoral program admission at the Chinese Academy of Sciences follows a spring and autumn system, held respectively in March and October each year. Since 2002, the question setting and grading for the doctoral English examinations in both spring and autumn have been fully undertaken by the Foreign Language Department of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In response to the Ministry of Education's requirement to eliminate the listening test in the doctoral English examination, a new examination syllabus was formulated in September 2005.
