Publishing Date: 2005-06-01
Features:
1. This dictionary includes 3,500 single characters, based on the "Common Characters List of Modern Chinese" issued by the State Language Commission and the State Education Commission on January 26, 1988.
2. This dictionary is suitable for primary and secondary school students. The annotations of character meanings are concise and precise, making them easy to grasp. It generally does not include classical or dialectal meanings. To assist readers in using standard characters, each character is labeled with its radical, stroke count, font structure, and stroke order. For some characters that are easily confused or misused, additional explanations are provided (marked with △) to highlight differences in form, sound, meaning, or usage, helping readers distinguish them.
3. The character entries are arranged in the order of Pinyin letters. Characters with the same sound and rhyme are listed in order of tone (level tone, rising tone, falling-rising tone, falling tone, neutral tone). Homophones are arranged by stroke count, and homophones with the same stroke count are arranged in the order of stroke initiation—(horizontal) (vertical) (diagonal) (dot) (hook).
4. Characters with multiple pronunciations are listed as separate entries, marked with (1), (2), (3) to indicate their order.
5. After the Pinyin pronunciation of each character entry is the radical, stroke count, font structure, and stroke order. For characters with multiple pronunciations, these details appear only once, not repeated. The radicals follow the same conventions as in general dictionaries, with difficult-to-find characters listed under multiple radicals. The stroke count and stroke order are based on the "General Standard for Stroke Order of Modern Chinese Characters" issued by the State Language Commission and the State Press and Publication Administration on April 7, 1997.
6. If a character has multiple meanings, they are listed as ①, ②, ③, with concrete meanings generally listed before abstract ones. Each meaning is followed by example words and sentences. Difficult example words are explained in parentheses.
7. This dictionary employs three methods for searching: syllable lookup, radical-sound lookup, and stroke lookup.
8. This dictionary includes three appendices: "The Scheme of Hanyu Pinyin," "Table of Standard Pronunciation for Dialectal Variants of Common Characters," and "Usage of Punctuation Marks."
