Translation between English and Chinese is an extremely complex mental activity process. It not only requires the translator to have a certain foundation in English, but also requires the translator to be able to freely transform between the two languages. In the unified entrance examination for postgraduate studies in China, translation requires candidates to translate relatively complex English sentences into accurate and fluent Chinese within a limited time. This often makes a non-English major candidate who has not received any translation training feel lost, but the fierce competition brought by the entrance examination leaves no escape for the vast majority of candidates. The only purpose of writing this postgraduate translation book is to help candidates carry out the most effective systematic learning and training, overcome the difficulties of translation, and thus smoothly pass the exam and get high marks. For candidates who already have a certain foundation in English, they can use this to improve their translation skills and temper their English ability in a relatively short time; while those who feel that their basic English knowledge is insufficient can consolidate their basic English skills and improve their English ability through translation training. Below, the writing features and writing format of this book will be explained separately.
I. Writing Features
This book is a product of translation teaching. In the translation teaching classrooms of English majors and non-English majors for many years, as well as in the translation teaching classrooms of New Oriental, I have countless times analyzed, explained, summarized, and organized the postgraduate entrance examination translation articles and sentences, and continuously adjusted them to make them systematic, rational, and simple. At the same time, the precious hand materials feedback from many New Oriental students allowed me to make the translation class more exciting, thereby further improving the translation problem-solving strategies I proposed. Specifically, this book has the following features:
1. A uniquely proposed translation method of splitting and combining. Starting from analyzing the translation process, I simplified the entire transformation process between English and Chinese into two steps—splitting and combining. Because the sentences in postgraduate entrance examination translation are all long and complex sentences, understanding long and complex sentences is very difficult, and translating them is even more difficult. However, because the English language itself has a very rigorous grammatical structure and logical structure, we can split the sentences of postgraduate entrance examination translation into short translation units by finding grammatical connection points, achieving the purpose of simplifying complexity. If we then use Chinese habits to combine these translated units, the entire translation process is smoothly realized. This relatively simple and practical translation method undoubtedly improves the operability of translation, allowing the vast majority of candidates to quickly master the translation method of postgraduate entrance examination translation.
2. The results of sentence splitting overlap with the key points of postgraduate entrance examination translation. Due to the scoring requirements of postgraduate entrance examination translation, the sentences of postgraduate entrance examination translation are often split into several parts under the scoring criteria to make the subjective questions objectively scored. The method of splitting postgraduate sentences in the scoring criteria is almost the same as the splitting points I proposed. Therefore, the splitting and combining translation method also provides a breakthrough for the majority of candidates to solve postgraduate entrance examination translation.
3. Emphasis on improving the level of translation systematic theory and practice. Of course, any English knowledge and skills cannot be mastered overnight, and translation is no exception. Therefore, this book starts from the basics of what translation is, then talks about how to translate; from lexical translation to syntactic translation, and is supported by a large number of translation exercises—80 sentences of postgraduate entrance examination translation from 1990 to 2005, 50 difficult sentence translation exercises, and 10 translation simulation questions (all chapters are accompanied by full text translation). In this way, it allows the majority of candidates to master systematic translation knowledge, while at the same time gaining confidence through high-quality translation exercises and entering the with ease.
II. Writing Format
The book is divided into seven chapters.
Chapter 1 mainly explains the basic knowledge of postgraduate entrance examination translation, starting from the postgraduate entrance examination translation syllabus and test paper analysis, allowing candidates to understand what translation is, what postgraduate entrance examination translation is, and clarify the standards and methods of translation. This chapter also provides a relatively complete summary of the splitting and combining translation method, allowing candidates to understand from the beginning how to conduct translation exercises, and enabling candidates to use this simple problem-solving step more flexibly in the exercises that follow, thereby achieving a "sublime" translation level in the exam.
Chapters 2 and 3 mainly explain basic translation skills, including lexical translation and syntactic translation. The problem that candidates have always been afraid of—“not enough words, so translation is not good enough” can be solved through translation techniques such as word meaning selection and extension. At the same time, all translation techniques are supported by classic translation examples, and all translated examples are as simple and clear as possible to facilitate understanding.
Chapter 4 provides a detailed explanation of all postgraduate entrance examination translation true questions from 1990 to 2004. This is the core part of the book. This part analyzes all sentences one by one, including sentence splitting, vocabulary explanation, and how to combine them into accurate and fluent Chinese translations using Chinese habits and translation techniques. It is recommended that candidates translate by themselves before reading the explanation, so that they can quickly consolidate the translation skills they have learned, master the translation method, and improve their English level.
Chapters 5 and 6 are selected translation exercises. Chapter 5 only contains single-sentence translation exercises, with a total of 50 difficult sentences. It is mainly to consolidate the candidates' translation ability and practice syntactic translation of postgraduate entrance examination translation often tested, such as noun clauses, attributive clauses, adverbial clauses, and passive voice.
Chapter 6 contains 10 simulation questions with the same difficulty as the real exam, which is conducive to the majority of candidates for final sprint exercises. The reference translations of all exercises and the full text translations of the 16 years of translation questions from 1990 to 2005 can be found in Chapter 7.
