Features: Botany is one of the three fundamental knowledge bases of biological science and technology. It is a compulsory foundational course for life science and related majors in comprehensive universities and normal universities, as well as a compulsory or elective foundational course for agriculture, forestry, traditional Chinese medicine, and other disciplines. In the 21st century, the continuously evolving plant science is increasingly closely linked to human survival and life. In light of this, it is highly necessary to rewrite a new Botany as part of the series textbooks for cultivating biology science and technology talents, replacing the original that has become inadequate for modern teaching requirements. This textbook incorporates the authors' extensive experience in teaching and researching botany, making significant revisions to the previously used Botany textbook. In terms of content, it begins with the diversity of plants in nature and their close relationship with humans, briefly introduces the life cycle of plants, systematically presents the morphological, anatomical characteristics, and developmental processes of plant cells, tissues, and organs, provides a detailed explanation of the fundamental principles and basic knowledge of plant natural classification and phylogeny, as well as the characteristics and classification of major plant groups. Additionally, it elaborates on human responsibilities in the relationship between plants and the environment, aiming to meet the teaching requirements of different disciplines in higher education. Considering that the relevant knowledge of plant molecular biology is thoroughly covered in other textbooks, this one does not delve into it in detail but instead briefly introduces the latest achievements in molecular systematics in the context of angiosperm classification systems. For teaching convenience, the textbook includes numerous illustrations and diagrams, with a significant portion derived from the authors' research work, while the rest are referenced from relevant reference books. Botany is an ancient yet vibrant discipline. It is both challenging and controversial to introduce the latest advancements in the field while defining its content to avoid overlap with other related disciplines. Whether our approach to compiling this textbook is correct still awaits the test of practice. Due to the urgency of time and the limited expertise of the authors, there may inevitably be shortcomings in the book. We sincerely welcome readers' criticism and suggestions!
