Features: The new round of college entrance examination (Gaokao) reforms primarily focus on four aspects: exam content, subject settings, exam format, and admission methods, with steady progress year by year. In recent five years, the pace and depth of reforms have significantly increased.
In terms of exam content, it has become comprehensive. Previously, both new and old curricula coexisted during the transition period, but by 2005, all provinces adopted the new curriculum. Additionally, the annual exam syllabus specifies the assessment content and requirements for each subject, adjusted according to new exam philosophies.
Regarding subject settings, models such as "3+2," "3+Arts/Science Comprehension," and "3+Arts/Science Comprehension +1" have emerged. This year, the English exam includes both listening-optional and listening-included versions. In exam formats, besides the autumn Gaokao, the spring Gaokao has also been introduced. In recent years, more provinces have adopted independent grading, starting with Shanghai in 2002, which broke the monopoly of a single national exam paper. By 2006, 16 provinces implemented independent grading, and several national exam papers were also introduced for different regions to choose from. In 2006, there were 18 Gaokao papers nationwide, varying in question types, quantities, and scoring. Except for Shanghai, all other exam papers were designed within the national syllabus framework, but independent grading provinces set more specific requirements based on the syllabus, reflecting regional educational characteristics and standards.
Through recent years' Gaokao papers, not only can one observe the reform process but also identify trends and patterns in exam questions. In terms of admission, universities have been granted greater autonomy, with more institutions adopting independent enrollment. Some regions have even implemented specialized exams for vocational colleges.
Gaokao reforms will continue, with the pace possibly accelerating, but the intensity will remain steady. Since Gaokao cannot be abolished, as students, it is essential to understand it, adapt to reforms, and recognize the trends. Through past exam papers, one can directly perceive the evolution and direction of reforms. Therefore, based on a thorough analysis of national and independent grading Gaokao papers, we have selected representative questions from 2002–2004 and all recent years' papers to compile The New Five-Year Gaokao to meet the urgent needs of teachers and students.
This book covers Chinese, Mathematics, English, Arts Comprehension, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Politics, History, and Geography. It includes Gaokao papers from the past five years across various regions. Here are some notes on editing:
1. Since 2005, all provinces adopted the new curriculum. Considering the differences between old and new curricula—especially in mathematics—only a small number of old curriculum papers are included. Older papers before 2004 are selected selectively for their representativeness.
2. Since 2004, more provinces have adopted independent grading. These papers share commonalities under the exam syllabus while reflecting regional characteristics in their specific guidelines. They serve as references for all regions, so all independent grading papers are included.
3. Most provinces use separate math papers for arts and science students. Soon, this distinction will disappear, so the book no longer includes papers with both arts and science questions. To better reflect differences between arts and science math exams and maximize information value at the same price, math papers are combined. Questions marked with (Arts) or (Science) are for arts or science students only. Unmarked questions are for both. Answers are labeled accordingly, making the book suitable for all students.
4. English exams include both listening-optional and listening-included versions. The listening-optional section comes with an audio cassette. For convenience, questions of the same year are grouped, with listening-included papers first and listening-optional ones last. The 2005 exam audio was read by a native American expert, with pronunciation, repetition, and speed aligned with Gaokao standards. The 2006 exam audio was recorded during actual exams, accurately reflecting pronunciation, speed, tone, and listening conditions, making it more valuable. The audio cassette follows the exact question order in the book.
5. Most regions now use "3+Arts/Science Comprehension," with few single-subject exams in physics, chemistry, biology, politics, history, or geography. Since comprehensive exams are based on individual subjects, we include split questions for these subjects to aid revision. Students should adjust time management when practicing split questions, as their quantity and scoring differ from single-subject papers.
6. This book is primarily for late-stage Gaokao revision, especially after the second round, to assess progress and identify gaps. Practicing past papers helps students familiarize themselves with the exam.
7. Most questions come with detailed answers, compiled at the end of the book for teacher reference and student self-assessment.
8. To better assist readers and facilitate student interaction, an online service is provided, offering insights into solving questions, free test materials, and more.
