Features: College English for Higher Vocational Education is developed according to the Basic Requirements for English Teaching in Higher Vocational and Technical Education, formulated by experts from various levels of vocational and technical education under the organization of the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education. College English is suitable for non-English major students in general higher vocational education, higher vocational education, and adult higher vocational education. The book consists of two volumes, and schools can arrange the teaching schedule according to their specific teaching conditions and students' professional characteristics. The Basic Requirements stipulate that the teaching objective of English courses in higher vocational and technical education is: after 180–220 hours of teaching, students should master certain basic English knowledge and develop abilities in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, enabling them to read and translate relevant English business materials with a dictionary, engage in simple oral and written communication in daily and business activities involving foreign affairs, and lay a foundation for further improving practical English proficiency. In accordance with this regulation, the purpose of compiling this textbook series is: while strengthening the training of basic language knowledge and skills, it emphasizes cultivating students' ability to use English for communication. During the compilation process, we strive to combine the fundamental theories of modern and contemporary domestic and international pedagogy, psychology, and English teaching methods with the actual practice of English teaching in China. We refer to and cite many recent domestic and international new elementary English textbooks, as well as materials from newspapers, magazines, and the internet, based on the principle of thematic teaching—organizing teaching activities around themes, providing sufficient language input, and appropriately repeating key points to achieve the goal of solid mastery and the formation of language skills—while understanding and meeting students' intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic needs. Thematic teaching, with its high vocabulary repetition rate, ease of association and memorization, and integration of knowledge, timeliness, philosophy, interest, and thoughtfulness, has been widely recognized by both teachers and students in recent years. The entire textbook (two volumes) consists of 20 units. The first volume contains 10 units, which transition from the B-level standard (1,000 English words upon enrollment) to the A-level standard (1,600 words) according to teaching requirements. The second volume also contains 10 units, designed through situational teaching methods with lecture-based, practice-based, and role-play-based teaching as the fundamental approaches, to maximize opportunities for students to communicate and practice. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that the English proficiency of higher vocational and technical graduates approaches or meets the Basic Requirements for College English Teaching (Trial Version) issued by the Ministry of Education in February 2004.
