Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at middle and primary school students as well as general members of the public, designed to meet the needs of language learning. The dictionary focuses on analyzing easily miswritten characters, emphasizing the correct writing of Chinese characters. It contains 1,408 entries, divided into 472 groups.
Our middle and primary school language teaching places great importance on improving the recognition and application abilities of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires the correct use of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological forms, relatively simple grammatical structures, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a reliance on monosyllabic morphemes in compound words, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. Therefore, character teaching has gone beyond the general scope of pure character forms and is closely linked to vocabulary learning. This is the reason why we chose to focus on characters and words first when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school language teaching.
The Character and Word Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, three of which are about single characters, and the other three are about compound words. Improving the understanding and application of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for individual language learning, so this series of reference books will also be helpful to the general public. Emphasizing foundational and common usage is the principle behind compiling this series of reference books. To this end, we have made some efforts:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words address issues of word meaning, similar/same pronunciation, and easily confused/miswritten forms. These six topics are both the foundation and the most important knowledge points in Chinese language learning.
2. Scope of Analysis: The analyzed characters and words are limited to common usage. Single characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most commonly used characters and 1,000 less commonly used characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words is based on the results of lexical metrological research. For example, synonyms are primarily selected based on the data from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, roughly conforming to the 8,548 most commonly used words. The selection of near-sound words focuses on those with high frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but different meanings, which are easily confused, including those with differences between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciation. For morphologically different words, the selection and analysis are made more objective and accurate by testing both the standard and variant forms in a large-scale corpus containing billions of characters.
3. Presentation of Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on analyzing easily confused and miswritten aspects. Most general dictionaries and encyclopedias focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and comprehensive definitions within the characters and words themselves. However, to gain an in-depth understanding and correct use of a character or word, it is necessary to understand the words adjacent to it and the subtle differences between them, thereby mastering their different usages. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Definitions and Analysis: Plain and simple language is used as much as possible, striving to make the content "deep yet easy to understand."
