Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at middle and primary school students as well as general members of the public, designed to meet the needs of language learning. The dictionary selects commonly misused characters and provides detailed analysis from aspects such as meaning, grammar, pronunciation, and usage to identify the reasons behind common errors, thereby improving the ability to use Chinese characters correctly. In our middle and primary school language teaching, emphasis has always been placed on improving the recognition and application abilities of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires the correct use of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger language units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a focus on monosyllabic morphemes in compound words, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the mere realm of pure form and is closely linked to the study of Chinese vocabulary. This is the reason why we chose to focus on characters and words when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school language teaching.
The Character and Word Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, three of which are about single characters, and the other three are about compound words. Improving the understanding and application of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for individual language learning, making this series of reference books helpful for the general public as well. Emphasizing foundational and common usage is the principle behind compiling this series of reference books, and we have made efforts in the following areas:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words focus on meaning, pronunciation, and similar/same forms, as well as easily confused and misused words. These six topics are both foundational and important knowledge points in Chinese language learning.
2. Selection of Analyzed Characters and Words: The analyzed characters are limited to the commonly used range, with single characters primarily selected from the 2,500 most frequently used characters and 1,000 less frequently used characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words makes full use of the findings from lexical metrology research. For example, synonyms are primarily selected based on data from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, roughly covering 8,548 commonly used words. The selection of near-sound words focuses on those with high frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but different meanings, including easily confused words between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciation. For variant forms, the selection and analysis are made more objective and accurate by testing both the standard and variant forms in a large-scale corpus containing billions of characters.
3. Presentation of Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on analyzing easily confused and misused aspects. Most dictionaries and reference books focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough definitions. However, to gain a deep understanding and correct use of a character or word, it is essential to understand the words adjacent to it and the subtle differences between them, thereby mastering their different usages. Providing this information and assistance is exactly what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: Efforts are made to use simple and accessible language in definitions and analysis, striving for clarity and ease of understanding.
