Calligraphy tutorial

Author: Ouyang Zhongshi, edited by Xu Wuwen
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 1994-06-01
Features: This book serves as a textbook for "Calligraphy" elective courses in higher education institutions, especially normal universities. Compared to other calligraphy works, this book has three major characteristics:
First, it is comprehensive, covering all fundamental knowledge such as various scripts ( Seal, Clerical, Regular, Running, Cursive), different calligraphic styles (Yan, Liu, Ou, Zhao), and various tools (brush, ink, paper, inkstone). It includes basic knowledge on holding and using the brush, copying Regular and Running scripts, appreciating different calligraphic styles, understanding stele and rubbing knowledge, calligraphy history, the history of calligraphic theory, calligraphic aesthetics, calligraphic creation, and calligraphy teaching. This material is suitable for teachers to select topics for lectures and for students to read.
Second, it is systematic and highly theoretical. It does not merely teach how to write characters and use the brush but primarily focuses on theoretical issues, explaining the internal connections between various elements of calligraphy. This is particularly suitable for university students seeking theoretical guidance.
Third, it does not force students to learn all calligraphic styles like Yan, Liu, Ou, and Zhao. Instead, it takes a practical approach, starting with the fundamental goal of teaching students to write aesthetically. The book first teaches the Regular script "Etc???" and the Running script "Li Sixin Stele," as these are easy to master and allow for smooth transitions to other styles once proficiency is achieved. Due to these three characteristics, the book is also suitable for other readers as a self-study reference.
The editors have also compiled a companion book, "Reference Materials for Calligraphy Teaching," which selects and introduces over 170 ancient steles and rubbings of various scripts and styles. This book provides learners with an overview of ancient Chinese calligraphy and enhances their aesthetic appreciation.
