Since its publication, this textbook has been used not only for undergraduate teaching in geography departments of higher education institutions but also as a reference for researchers in fields such as natural resources, environmental protection, agricultural regional planning, and territorial management. It has been printed a total of 150,000 copies and has received high praise. This edition was awarded the National Excellent Science and Technology Book Award for 1979–1981. The second edition received the National Excellent Higher Education Teaching Material Award (1987) and the First National Excellent Geography Book Award (Textbook Category) (1994).
