This is a thought-provoking, meaningful, and valuable young adult literary work. Like J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, Dongfang Yue's The Search for Pao Pao also narrates stories of youth through the lens of memory. Its greatest value lies in showing us that youth gains solemnity through reflection. A youth without thought is barren; the "glittering allure of the flesh" will only become a shallow and ugly exhibition.
It primarily tells the story of a missing girl, who, during the search for her by others, discovers something she is searching for. That missing list begins the search for a body, while the diary recovered from the flood sets me on a different path of search in silence. Unknowingly, she has led me through footsteps and boundaries, concealment and exposure, reality and illusion, the flesh and the soul, and I have actually embarked on a journey of searching for myself. Did I find Pao Pao, or did Pao Pao find herself?
