Features: One of the studies on "Urban Space and Knowledge Groups." The Eastern Journal, as one of the earliest large-scale comprehensive magazines in old China, holds a significant position in the public discourse of modern China. This book collects articles on public discourse research from 1904 to 1932, covering topics such as changes in the era, the public sphere, social transformation, and the conflict between Eastern and Western cultures, providing reference materials for scholars and researchers. The research in this book does not cover the entire Eastern Journal but only extends to 1932, because after 1932, both the domestic situation and the Eastern Journal itself underwent significant changes. The period from 1932 to 1948 should be studied separately. The Eastern Journal relied on a group of intellectuals who upheld fundamental values such as rationality, tolerance, diversity, gradualism, and reconciliation to construct a moderate liberal public space.
