Mi Fu (1051–1107), originally named Mi Fu, styled Yuanzhang, and known by other sobriquets such as Lumen Jushi, Huozheng Huren, Xiangyang Manshi, and Haiye Wai Shi. He was born in Taiyuan (now part of Shanxi) and later moved to Xiangyang (now Xiangyang in Hubei). In his later years, he resided in Runzhou (now Zhenjiang in Jiangsu). He held the position of Assistant Director of the Ministry of Rites and was also known as "Mi Nan Gong." He was one of the four great calligraphers of the Northern Song Dynasty, alongside Su Shi (Zhong), Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, and Cai Xiang.
Mi Fu possessed exceptional talent, an unrestrained and eccentric personality, and was known for his wild and unrestrained spirit. His calligraphy was bold, unrestrained, and ethereal, as if soaring like a heavenly horse or floating like clouds and cranes in the sky. When Mi Fu wrote this piece, he was thirty-four years old.
