Features: Information science and life science are the two leading disciplines of the 21st century. Artificial intelligence is the most important, most exciting, and most promising interdisciplinary field within these two fields. Driven by the global demand for informatization and propelled by the significant achievements in information science and life science, artificial intelligence research is becoming an endeavor with particularly bright prospects for innovation. Since the birth of the artificial intelligence discipline in 1956, China's scientific and technological workers have been tracking and learning with keen sensitivity. After nearly half a century of assimilation and integration, they have moved from tracking and learning to independently researching major scientific issues and conducting significant scientific innovations. Since its establishment in 1981, the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence has held 10 national academic annual meetings. This year marks the 11th China Artificial Intelligence Academic Annual Meeting. The conference received 536 papers, and after expert review, 320 papers were accepted. The proceedings of the conference have been officially published by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications Press as the "China Artificial Intelligence Progress 2005" series in the premium collection, and the best papers will be recommended for publication in national-level journals. The conference invited renowned experts and scholars to deliver keynote speeches. Five thematic discussions were organized: strategic discussions on intelligent science, artificial life and artificial emotion, artificial intelligence education, machine games and Chinese chess, and machine learning and data mining.
