Antonín Dvo?ák's G Minor Violin Sonatina Op. 100 was completed shortly before the sensational premiere of his E Minor Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" (hereinafter referred to as From the New World) in New York on December 16, 1893. This sonatina is the last chamber music work he composed during his stay in the United States. The numbering of this work also marked that his creative output had accumulated to 100 pieces at that time. Dvo?ák conceived of this sonatina as a gift for his six children, especially for his 15-year-old Ottilie and 10-year-old T?ník, and thus the difficulty of the piece was tailored to the level the children could handle. In a letter to his Berlin publisher Fritz Simrock on January 2, 1894, Dvo?ák wrote: "During the days of November 23 to December 3, 1893, I wrote a piece that, though not lengthy, was quite novel and full of natural emotional expression." He wrote in the letter: "This piece was composed for young people (as a gift for my two children). But adults can certainly also enjoy a great deal from it."
