Publish Date: 2006-01-01
Features: This book collects over 2,100 entries of research papers on the history and theory of Chinese ethnic music from the 20th century (1901–2000), as well as more than 80 thematic collections and monographs. It can be said that the majority of published works on the history and theory of Chinese ethnic music during this century are included in this book. The author has written content summaries for 180 of the papers and all thematic collections and monographs. Due to the foundational process of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and understanding these documents, the author has a relatively clear overall understanding of the content, scope, trends, and progress of ethnic music history and theory research in China over this "century." This has led to the completion of a nearly 50,000-word comprehensive paper titled The Establishment and Expansion of 20th-Century Research on Ethnic Music in China.
The book also reprints more than ten papers, which are included either because they represent representative achievements of a certain period, showcase representative examples of a certain type of research, summarize the progress of traditional music from a specific region or ethnic group, or remain thought-provoking and relevant today. These papers are included in their original form for the sake of completeness and reader convenience.
The sources of the collected paper entries primarily include publicly published professional music theory journals, some comprehensive art publications, and representative art paper collections.
