The book now provided to readers is based on the author's lecture notes on Chaikovsky's symphonies. The idea of holding this lecture emerged after the Second All-Union Conducting Competition in 1966. At that time, it was discovered that some young conductors had a deep understanding of Western classical works—Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, etc.—but their knowledge of Chaikovsky's works was very superficial. As a result, interpreting Chaikovsky's most widely known symphonies (the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth) was unclear to them, and they always understood these works based on "habits." The author's concern deepened at another conducting competition in 1971, making the idea of holding this lecture even stronger. Thus, in May 1973, a series of lectures on interpreting Chaikovsky's symphonies was held at the Moscow Conservatory for students of the conducting department and participants in the refresher course for cultural workers of the Soviet Ministry of Culture.
