Features: This is a "book of the century." The lives of two men who are completely opposite, the ever-changing identity of a woman, immerse us in the fleeting glimpses of the human condition in the 20th century. It is difficult to say precisely what story the genius novelist Thomas Pynchon tells us, or what his purpose is in telling it. However, his vivid imagination, exquisite language, and absurd sense of humor are enough to allow us to see through the maze of historical and fictional events and appreciate the extraordinary charm of postmodern fiction. V. demonstrates the disillusionment of Puritan ideals and the decline of Puritanism in American society in the 20th century. One of the gathering places of the Fremen, the Martha Wintrop boarding house in the novel, contrasts with the John Wintrop of early American Puritanism. At the end of the novel, Brenda Wigselsworth, who writes an awkward and comical poem, contrasts with the pious Puritan poet Michael Wigselsworth of 17th-century America. The gradual liberation of the noblewoman Victoria Lane from Puritan thought and her transformation into the amoral V. further prove the decline of Puritanism today. V. portrays a wide variety of characters, each adopting a different way of life, and the entire novel is like a kaleidoscope of life. Every chapter and section of the novel presents a diverse array of scenes or events, yet all follow the of entropy in their development, reflecting the disintegration and chaos of society, as well as the blindness and helplessness of humanity. Upon finishing the novel and reflecting on it, readers will deeply feel that the history of humanity is an inevitable march toward the heat death of the universe. Pynchon's novel is highly representative of the United States in the 1960s. At that time, American literature underwent tremendous changes in both content and form, giving rise to the absurdism of postmodernism. Many writers examined history and felt that the world had gone off the rails, with America facing internal and external crises, a multitude of problems, and absurd and bizarre phenomena at every level of social life. Human free will had been lost, and individuality and self were gradually dying out. Such an era could not produce serious drama; instead, writers could only express the tragic absurdity of human existence through a form of comedy that was almost comically mocking—a hallmark of black humor. Absurdist writers often wrote about the humble and trivial masses with great seriousness. In the novel, these characters attempt to find or establish order in a chaotic world and to seek or imagine meaning in their disordered lives. As readers laugh at their useless efforts, they also empathize with their confusion, frustration, pain, and emptiness. Pynchon depicts the phenomenon of entropy increase in human society in V., revealing the mediocrity and illusion of life's pursuits and hinting at the world's march toward heat death. However, Pynchon does not advocate nihilism or doomsday ideas. His purpose clearly lies in magnifying and displaying the sickness and alienation of humanity to the readers, thereby evoking their horror and awakening, in the hope of saving oneself and others, and redeeming the times. For Chinese readers, reading this novel not only helps us understand American society but also prompts us to reflect on ourselves. Moreover, Pynchon's postmodern narrative techniques and his use of black humor offer us inspiration, making our reading experience both novel and enjoyable.
