The first part narrates how Don Quixote becomes obsessed with knight-errant novels and attempts to imitate the life of ancient chivalric knights. He puts together a suit of armor, rides a lean horse, and embarks on his first adventure, returning home injured. On his second outing, he finds his neighbor Sancho Panza as his squire and together they go on many absurd and ridiculous adventures: mistaking windmills for giants, taking an inn for a castle, and attacking a flock of sheep as enemies only to nearly lose his life before being rescued and brought home. The second part describes Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza embarking on their third adventure, depicting some of the perilous encounters Don Quixote faces along the way, as well as how the Countess tricks both Don Quixote and Sancho. It also portrays how Sancho becomes the governor of an island. Later, Don Quixote is defeated by his neighbor Simon, dressed as a knight, and returns home, bedridden. Upon his deathbed, he finally realizes the folly of his ways and denounces the knight-errant novels.
