Our country is currently in a deep period of reform and opening-up. As our interactions with the world expand, the significance of foreign literature to us becomes increasingly important. Through the study of foreign literature, we can open a window to understand and absorb foreign cultures, enabling us to grasp the achievements of foreign literature, enrich our literary knowledge, and enhance our literary appreciation and analytical skills. For undergraduate students in the elementary education major who will engage in teaching and education in the future, the offering of this course is clearly essential. The knowledge system of foreign literature is vast, and the works of its writers are as numerous as the sands of the sea. Foreign literature textbooks must make selections in their content based on needs. Considering the characteristics of elementary education undergraduate students and the actual teaching hours, guided by the principles of combining scientific rigor with practicality and relevance, and in line with the spirit of relevant documents such as the "Full-Time Compulsory Education Chinese Language Curriculum Standards" issued by the Ministry of Education, the overall writing strategy of this textbook is as follows:
First, it focuses primarily on European and American literature, with only a brief introduction to Asian and African literature.
Second, it emphasizes classical European and American literature from before the 19th century, providing a general overview of the development of modern and contemporary literature from the 20th century onward while selecting key writers for discussion.
Third, it focuses on the interpretation and analysis of key works, with simplified coverage of the social and historical background and the lives of the authors.
Fourth, it provides detailed introductions to the plots and content of the works, supplemented by examples from the texts for analysis.
The overarching principle is to ensure comprehensiveness while being selective, with emphasis on key areas. For literary phenomena summarized in the textbook, teachers or students can, based on actual needs, supplement their teaching or self-study by following the (clues) provided in the textbook.
