Features: Traditional festivals in China are diverse in form and rich in content, serving as an integral part of the long-standing historical and cultural heritage of the Chinese nation. These festivals are deeply rooted in our nation's long history, representing a valuable spiritual cultural legacy. Over the centuries, scholars, literati, and poets have composed countless timeless masterpieces for each festival, which have been widely cherished and passed down, imbuing traditional festivals with profound cultural depth, elegance, romance, and broad appeal. Among these, lantern riddles are an essential component of traditional festivals, with their origins closely tied to festivals like the Lantern Festival, and they have become one of the primary cultural activities. During major traditional festivals such as the Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival each year, various forms of lantern riddle events are held across the country, adding vibrancy to the cultural life of the festivals.
To inherit and promote outstanding traditional Chinese culture and flourish lantern riddle creation in the new century, at the end of 2003, National Lantern Riddle Information initiated and organized the "Chinese Traditional Festival Lantern Riddle Creative Competition." The competition received over a thousand traditional festival-themed riddles from participants nationwide. These new riddles are all related to Chinese traditional festivals, covering terms, poems, allusions, customs, and legends. Building on this foundation, we further extensively collected and organized riddles from past years, compiling this Selected Lantern Riddles of Traditional Festivals. Our aim is to provide more comprehensive research materials for traditional festival culture from the perspective of lantern riddles, while also offering richer content for mass lantern riddle activities during these festivals.
