Author: (Japanese) Natsume Sōseki
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-05-01
Features: Gorō uses the story of a naive, straightforward, and impulsive young man named Gorō as he enters society and engages in various dramatic conflicts with the vulgar people around him. It skillfully and bitingly satirizes the ugly phenomena in society, criticizes petty, manipulation, and hypocrisy, and praises justice, honesty, and innocence. The writing is fluent, the rhythm is clear, and the characters are vivid. The entire work flows like a continuous stream, blending seriousness with humor, full of delightful wit, and remains a widely read and beloved work to this day. It is truly an exceptional masterpiece among modern Japanese literature. The Heart, on the other hand, carries a touch of what is now called a detective-like flavor. "I" meet a "Mr.," later receiving a long letter from him (at the time, "Mr." was already deceased). The letter tells of "Mr." falling in love with the beautiful only daughter of their landlord during his university days, along with his friend K. "Mr." schemes to make K commit suicide, achieving his own desires. However, he often suffers from the condemnation of his conscience and morality, and ultimately takes his own life as well. The novel portrays the clash between love and friendship, the conflict between selfishness and moral integrity, highlighting the contradictory, disoriented, helpless, and desperate spiritual world of modern Japanese intellectuals. At the same time, it raises a profound question about life. This long novel can be considered Sōseki's most captivating work, still ranking among the ten most favorite books for Japanese middle school students today. To put it bluntly, without Gorō and The Heart, it's even questionable whether Sōseki would have survived until today.
