Improper feeding causing newborn jaundice?

Patient's question:

Our baby was born at 36 weeks and is now 40 days old. We are breastfeeding, and their bowel movements and urine have been normal. They sleep well, but they have been very yellow. The hospital did some tests and said their (bilirubin) levels are high. Could improper feeding have caused the newborn (jaundice)?

Doctor's answer:

What you describe is pathological jaundice, which is not much related to improper feeding. You can stop observing breastfeeding for three days. Sometimes, breast milk jaundice may occur. If the jaundice disappears after stopping breastfeeding, then you don't need to worry. If the jaundice does not subside, you must receive medication treatment and undergo blue light therapy. It is advisable to let the child drink some warm water or glucose water, which can help alleviate jaundice.
