Features: The 21st century will be a new era of comprehensive development and utilization of the ocean. With the rapid advancement of science and technology, people have come to recognize the immense potential significance of the ocean for the survival and development of a nation. Since the founding of New China, especially over the past two decades of reform and opening-up, China's marine industry has achieved outstanding achievements, with the average annual growth rate of main marine industries exceeding 20%. In 2000, the gross domestic product (GDP) of coastal cities and counties accounted for 37% of the national GDP. Coastal provinces, regions, and cities, with only 13% of the land area, support 40% of the country's population, which fully demonstrates that the ocean is closely related to our nation's long-term interests. To reflect this relationship between the ocean and the nation and to change the long-standing land-centric, sea-averse mindset rooted in history, we have compiled this book, "Key Marine Events in 20th-Century China," based on historical facts and chronological order. It aims to provide a comprehensive overview of history, draw lessons from the past, and inspire future actions. The book showcases significant events that occurred in different historical periods of the past century in China, which have promoted the development of marine industries, reflected the progress of marine affairs, or had a major impact on society.
