Features: The Soviet Union's strategic ballistic missile nuclear submarine "Red October," equipped with a new silent propulsion system, suddenly defects to the United States under the planning of its captain, Ramis, during an exercise. To prevent this multi-billion-dollar advanced nuclear submarine from falling into U.S. hands, the Soviet Union deploys nearly 100 ships to the Atlantic for search and interception, ready to sink it upon discovery. This intelligence is obtained by U.S. spies. As a result, the United States mobilizes all its forces and requests assistance from the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom to search for the "Red October." The CIA, the U.S. Navy, and the White House also devise a deception: to trick the Soviet Union into believing that the submarine has been destroyed in a nuclear accident. To achieve their respective goals, both sides risk direct confrontation and engage in a struggle in the Atlantic. For a time, the tense situation in the North Atlantic reaches a critical point.
