Features: The prescribed repertoire in vocal examinations serves as a standard for assessing exam results. Developing a relatively scientific and practical set of examination repertoire is an rigorous and meticulous task. With the development of society and the accumulation of practical experience, this work must be continuously refined. Since the first publication of this collection in 2000, we have received some feedback, some from the perspective of assessment and others from the perspective of teaching. Based on these suggestions and in conjunction with the current realities of examinations, we have once again organized relevant experts to make substantial revisions and additions to this collection.
First, we made appropriate adjustments to some of the repertoire. For example, we removed some outdated or less widely circulated pieces and added some outstanding works from recent years as well as classic and representative songs. Additionally, based on the examination trends in recent years, we adjusted the order and voice assignments of some pieces.
Second, to provide more choices for examinees and enable vocal enthusiasts to become familiar with and master more suitable repertoire during their studies, this revision has significantly increased the number of pieces. To enrich the repertoire, we have strived to ensure that songs within each difficulty level in this collection are not repeated. However, in practical use, pieces within the same difficulty level across different voice parts can be cross-referenced for use. The pitch range between different voice parts is approximately a minor third apart. For instance, a mezzo-soprano examinee wishing to sing a C-major art song from the soprano repertoire can transpose it down to A-major.
In this revision, the adult collection still uses the three-tiered difficulty levels—beginner, intermediate, and advanced—to categorize the repertoire. Based on our observations, this classification is more suitable for adult groups than a nine-level system. On one hand, it provides examinees with greater flexibility and choice, and on the other hand, it makes vocal examinations more guiding.
