Features: This book is a large collection of legendary tales from the two major periods of the Tang and Five Dynasties (618-960) and the Northern and Southern Song (960-1279), spanning over 660 years. It includes approximately 80 individual legendary tales and over 70 specialized works on legends, totaling more than 400 pieces. In addition to anonymous authors, it features over 110 writers. The book adheres to strict selection criteria. All included works are renowned masterpieces from important ancient classics such as Taiping Guangji and a few quasi-legendary tales that bridge the gap between legendary and note-taking fiction. The editorial style largely follows the examples set by Lu Xun's Tang and Song Legendary Tales and Wang Piqiang's Tang Dynasty Fiction, with some modifications. The entire book is organized according to the original structure of ancient texts, dividing works into individual tales and collections, and uniformly arranged in chronological order. Each piece consists of five parts: introduction, main text, appendices, annotations, and translations.
