Features: Explores the impact of consumer culture on human society, metaphorically predicts the future direction of business models, a distinctive business research work in 2006, setting a precedent for the study of business culture! Disneyfication, not McDonaldization! McDonaldization refers to the business model represented by McDonald's restaurants, characterized by homogeneity, high reproducibility, standardization, and assembly-line processes. In contrast, Disneyfication refers to the business model represented by Disney theme parks, characterized by diversity and humanity. McDonaldization is rooted in economic rationality, scientism, and scientific management. In a McDonaldized world, all consumers have the same face, lacking individuality and choice. Disneyfication, on the other hand, is rooted in the post-Fordist concept of diversity. In a Disneyfied world, consumers are at the center, and the purpose of service providers is to offer consumers an exciting entertainment experience. Disneyfication often replaces the dullness of homogeneous consumption with thrilling experiences. We are living in an experience economy where consumers seek services that provide unforgettable experiences in an entertaining way. Disneyfication can be seen as a metaphor for the model and trend of modern commercial society's development. It is a lens through which we can understand the essence of modern society and a way to think about issues related to consumption and globalization. Its characteristics are reflected in:
Theming. Attracting consumers by offering a thematic experience that dilutes the sense of economic transactions, thereby increasing the likelihood of their purchasing goods.
Mixed Consumption. Combining multiple consumption methods to provide consumers with as many opportunities as possible, encouraging them to spend more time at the consumption venue.
Commodification. Leveraging the Disney brand and famous cartoon characters to sell a variety of goods.
Performative Labor. The work culture of employees is distinctive, with a strong performative element. Performative labor serves as a lubricant for the entire process in many ways: it can give ordinary goods and services a unique character, express the theme, and enhance customers' intention to purchase.
In 2003, George Ritzer published "The McDonaldization of Society," in which he conducted a thorough analysis of the business model represented by McDonald's, critiquing its tendencies toward homogenization, standardization, and dehumanization. The book immediately attracted widespread attention and discussion, becoming a classic work in sociological research on business phenomena. In 2004, Bryman released "The Disney Effect," which can be seen as marking the end of the global business model represented by McDonald's. Meanwhile, "The Disney Effect" heralds the rise of a new business model that represents the future of commercial development. Building on the bleak conclusions of "The McDonaldization of Society," the book points toward a direction for the future of the business world. The two works complement each other, providing a compelling exposition of the two parallel business models. These are interdisciplinary research works whose analyses and conclusions will not only interest lovers of humanities and social sciences but also offer significant benefits to business professionals. Especially in "The Disney Effect," Bryman concisely and accurately summarizes the characteristics and principles of the business model represented by Disney theme parks, offering a practical and effective business mindset. Every thoughtful business professional can discover the immense commercial value of these principles and easily apply them to their own business operations to create a new, captivating, exciting, and highly profitable business model.
