Features: Chinese landscape painting emerged before the Warring States period, flourished in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was established in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and reached its peak in the Sui and Tang dynasties. In the early days, landscape painting was merely a background for figures. By the Jin Dynasty and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, landscape painting gradually became an independent genre. Representative figures of this period include Gu Kaizhi, known as the "Three Perfections" in later generations, Dai Di, a pioneer in landscape painting, and Xie He of the Southern Qi dynasty, who systematically proposed the "Six Principles" theory for evaluating Chinese painting in the Ancient Painting Catalogue. Other outstanding painters of the same era include Lu Tanwei, Zhang Sengyou, and Cao Zhongda. Beginners should choose models that combine rich traditional techniques with ample room for practice through copying, enabling them to not only learn techniques and experience natural scenery but also prepare for future independent creation. It is essential to carefully study the models, understanding their composition, mountain and rock formations, different brushwork techniques, tree styles, and the interplay of light and shadow throughout the painting. Only after fully grasping their essence and having a clear understanding should one begin to paint. Beginners should not rush to achieve success. When learning painting techniques, a gradual and step-by-step approach is necessary, starting with small steps and accumulating knowledge, progressing from simple to complex and from basic to advanced levels. Beginners should avoid mechanical copying, as it may lead to rigid and stiff brushwork. It is important to remember that copying is merely a means and transition for mastering basic skills, not the ultimate goal. Beginners should also draw inspiration from related arts, such as calligraphy. The brushwork used in landscape painting for trees, rocks, outlines, and textures all align with calligraphy techniques. A solid foundation in calligraphy greatly benefits the study of Chinese painting. This book avoids unnecessary details and directly focuses on key points, emphasizing the connections between concepts to present the fundamental elements of landscape painting. The intention is to help friends learn landscape painting efficiently and achieve twice the result with half the effort.
